ANIMAC PUBLISHES THE SELECTION OF FILMS FROM THE OFFICIAL SECTIONS OF THE SHOW: SHORTS, FUTUR TALENT, PETIT ANIMAC AND TALENT.CAT
The productions will be screened at the 27th edition of the International Animation Film Festival of Catalonia, which will be held in Lleida from February 23 to 26 and online from 3 to 12 of March
Three short films that are on the Oscar shortlist will be screened in the Official Shorts Section: The Flying Sailor, by the Canadians Wendy Tilby and Amanda Forbis; Sierra, by the Estonian Sander Joon and O Homem do Lixo (The Garbage Man) , by the Portuguese Laura Gonçalves

Animac, the International Animation Film Festival of Catalonia, publishes today the list of productions that have been selected to be part of the official sections of the contest: Shorts Official Section, Future Talent, Petit Animac and Talent. cat, and which will be shown in this 27th edition that will be held in person in Lleida from February 23 to 26 and online through the Filmin del 3 platform to March 12. Three of the short films selected are on the shortlist of the Oscars. It is about The Flying Sailor (Shorts 1), by the Canadians Wendy Tilby and Amanda Forbis, based on a real event of an explosion due to the collision of two ships in a port; Sierra (Short 4), from the Estonian Sander Joon, who plunges into a surreal world of car racing, and O Homem do Trash (< b>The Garbage Man – Shorts 4), by the Portuguese Laura Gonçalves, which tells the story of a man who lived a hard life with humor and fantasy.
The official sections of Animac are especially dedicated to short films, the soul of the Mostra, as it allows expressing a more personal vision and stamp and maximum experimentation in the search for new languages , aesthetics and techniques.
The Shorts Official Section, a selection of the best and most recent animated short films worldwide, this year presents 40 proposals from 22 different nationalities distributed in five sessions. Apart from the three works already mentioned, this section also highlights the stop-motion short film Salvation Has No Name (Shorts 2), by director Joseph Wallace, and Tethered (Shorts 2), a film by the Spanish Carmen Córdoba that talks about the bond between a mother and a daughter and is nominated for awards Goya.
They will also screen Amok (Shorts 3), by Balázs Turai, awarded the Cristal prize by the Annecy festival, and Babičino seksualno živjeno (Granny’s Sexual Life – Short 3), by Urška Djukić and Émilie Pigeard, nominated for the César awards of the French Academy. The first of these is a dialogue-free short film that tells how the protagonist faces his inner demon after losing his fiancée and his looks in a freak accident, while the second goes on a journey into his youth a grandmother who illustrates Slovenian women in the first half of the 20th century.
In the section for narrative and visual experiments of the Short Official Section, the Shorts 5 White Cube session, the films will be shown The Hour Coat, by Amy Kravitz, Backflip,< span data-contrast=”none”> by Nikita Diakur, Boca< span data-contrast=”none”>, by Frederic Amat and Intermission, by Réka Bucsi, among others.
About the section Future Talent, the section dedicated to short films received from animation schools around the world, this edition has three sessions with a total of 37 short films selected from 14 nationalities, among which stand out À bicyclette, by Océane Lavergne, Benjamin Langagne, Lucas Durot, Pierre Cilluffo, Marine Beuvain and Kerrian Detay; Slouch, by Michael Bohnenstingl, and An Ostrich Told Me the World Is Fake and I Think I Believe It, by Lachlan Pendragon. This section is an excellent showcase for new creators, who have just graduated and have the opportunity to see projected their short films on the big screen.
The Petit Animac, the section of the contest designed especially for the little ones and their families, has 48 films from 18 nationalities scheduled in six different sessions. The aim of Petit Animac is to introduce children to the world of animation and its various techniques, and to encourage their curiosity and taste for cinema.
Within the proposals, the series of micro shorts will be screened Našeprasátko (Petit Animac 1 Short & Sweet), by Jaromír Plachý, creator of the adventure video game Botanicula, as well as Bill and Janet(The Smeds and the Smoos – Petit Animac 2) , by Daniel Snaddon and Samantha Cutler, which is the tenth adaptation of the book by author Julia Donaldson, and Operación Frankenstein (Petit Animac 3), by José María Fernández de Vega, a work with a surprising ending, far from the classic story.
Other outstanding films that can be seen at Petit Animac are Les Astres Immobiles (Fixed Stars -Petit Animac 4), by Noémi Gruner and Séléna Picque, a story that gives visibility to the life of Chenghua and the difficulties of his parents, and The jewel of the swamp (Petit Animac 5), by Camilo Ayala Nieto.
Both the Shorts Official Section , such as Future Talent and Petit Animac are eligible for the Mostra award, which is decided by the public.
On the other hand, the section Talent.cat, which brings together the animated films of students from all over the Catalan Countries, this year has the participation of 14 centers that have presented fifteen films: Let’s Dance, Beyond the Fringe, La Charada, Half-Dog, Pank con chocolate, Sweet Side, Jidai (次代), Present Era, Windows, Pieces of Us, Chimborazo, Sully, Sunburned, Vestiges, Mental Process and Butterfly . It should be noted that, although Animac is the oldest exhibition, it is also the youngest because it welcomes all these proposals from students from different schools in the territory, says the director of Animac, Carolina López. In this section, the best short will be chosen by a jury made up of professionals.
ANIMAC 2023 “LATAM BOOM!”
Organized by Lleida City Council from February 23 to 26 in person and online through the Filmin platform from 3 to 12 of March 2023, Animac, the International Animation Film Festival of Catalonia, this year’s edition celebrates the creativity of Latin American animation under the motto “LatAm boom!”, with signs of the territory’s identity such as cultural wealth, the search for its own histories and aesthetics, diversity, magical realism or politico-social commitment.
It will feature the best of animated cinema with monographic and retrospective sessions, plus a careful selection of short and feature films of recent creations from around the world, exhibitions, conferences and masterclasses for animation lovers.
