Animac, the International Animation Film Festival of Catalonia, organised by the Lleida City Council from 20 to 23 February 2025, today announces the list of films that have been selected to take part in the different official sections of the event: Official Short Film Section, Future Talent, Little Animac and Talent.cat. Among the works, two award-winning short films are Percebes (Portugal and France, 2024), directed by Alexandra Ramires and Laura Gonçalves, which narrates the journey of a barnacle from the sea to the plate, reflecting on tourism and overcrowding, and which has received the Annecy Crystal Award 2024; and the international multi-award-winning Beautiful Men (Belgium, France and the Netherlands, 2023), by Nicolas Keppens, which delves, with humour and impeccable stop motion animation, into the story of three bald brothers who travel to Istanbul to undergo a hair transplant. Hurikán (Czech Republic, France, Slovakia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, 2024), by Jan Saska, starring a man with a pig’s head, which has been selected by the Sundance Film Festival in the animated short film section, will also be screened.
Three of the short films selected for the 2025 edition of Animac – Beurk! (Yuck!), by Loïc Espuche (France, 2024), Wander to Wonder, by Nina Gantz (Netherlands, France, Belgium and United Kingdom, 2023), and Beautiful Men itself- have been nominated for the Oscar Awards in the category of Best Animated Short Film. In addition, the Oscars will also be present in the feature film selection, with two titles nominated for Academy Awards: Flow, by Gints Zibalodis (Latvia, France, Belgium, 2024), and Memoirs of a Snail, by Adam Elliot (Australia, 2024).
The Official Short Film Section, which features the best and most recent animated short films from around the world, has 40 films from different countries, distributed in five sessions. In addition to the shorts mentioned above, there will also be screenings of: Volcelest (France, 2024), by Éric Briche, about the adventure of a little weasel; Goodbye (United Kingdom, 2024), by José Prats, about the emancipation of a son and the sadness felt by the father; [S] (United Kingdom and Bulgaria, 2024), by Mario Radev; Maleza -Wildflower– (Spain, Portugal and Brazil, 2024), by Carina Pierro, a poetic essay on control, the unwanted, life and its contradictions, and とても短い -Extremely Short-, by director Koji Yamamura, the great indie auteur of Japanese animation, among many others.
Within Future Talent, the section dedicated to short films received from animation schools around the world, 33 short films selected from up to 14 different nationalities will be included in three sessions. This section is an excellent showcase for new creators, who have just graduated and have the opportunity to see their short films screened on the big screen.
Among the proposals of the Little Animac, you can see Pececillo -Tiddler- (United Kingdom, 2024) in premiere in Spain, by directors Andy Martin and Alex Bain, a story of a little fish with a big imagination; Animanimusical (Germany, 2024), by director Julia Ocker, a short film that belongs to the series ‘Animanimals’; Los Carpinchos -Capybaras- (France, Chile, Uruguay, 2024), by the renowned Uruguayan director Alfredo Soderguit, a beautiful portrait of wild and farm animals; AB OVO (Ukraine, 2023), by Oleksandr Viken, which narrates the life of a turtle who wants to learn to fly, and Humans Build The Biggest Nests (Canada, 2024), by animator Isaac King, also premiering in Spain.
The Official Short Film Section, Future Talent and Little Animac are all eligible for the Animac Audience Awards.
On the other hand, the Talent.cat section has a high level of participation from schools and centres in the Catalan Countries, which have presented a dozen short films that stand out for their diversity of styles and techniques. A jury made up of professionals from the world of animation will choose the best short film in this section. It will be formed by the producer Laura Aguado, the CEO and executive director of VIEW Conference Maria Elena Gutiérrez and the cultural journalist Xavi Serra.
The selection of short films will be screened during the 29th edition of the Festival, dedicated to the relationship between humans and animals. This format is the soul of Animac, because it allows the authors’ vision and personal stamp to be expressed, as well as maximum experimentation in the search for new languages, aesthetics and techniques.
